Are we about to get permanent daylight? Can you buy clouds? Dive into the craziest environmental solutions.
Entrepreneurs are working on everything from permanent sunlight for solar firms to blocking out the sun on the other extreme (hopefully, those two companies don't speak at the same conferences...)
IN THIS ISSUE
Environmental solutions that will inspire you, scare you, and make you laugh and cry
Reflect Orbital is building reflectors in space to shine sunlight on solar panels at night. How similar is this to the James Bond villain’s plan for eternal daylight? Have I told my wife I’ve purchased permanent sun for our house because I want better tomato plants than our neighbors? Find out about both below.
Make Sunsets is creating clouds. You can even buy clouds from them. All in the name of cooling Earth and giving humanity more time.
Bioreceptive concrete, solar kiosks, and 3D printing of homes are other solutions we highlight.
Emissions Decisions is a weekly newsletter investigating our thesis on environmental trends/solutions. In its initial form, it is about hypothesis testing, and in its later stages, it will provide everything you need to help the environment. Our long-term goal is to provide tools that power optimal environmental decisions. We appreciate the support in achieving this!

REFLECT ORBITAL IS SELLING SUNLIGHT
People complain about the lack of renewable energy at night and are worried about situations where it’s freezing in the evening, there is no sun, and the wind isn’t blowing. Well, the team at Reflect Orbital is planning to solve this with satellites that will sell sunlight to solar farms after dark. Kudos to them for their ambition, and honestly, with a cost curve that has accelerated much faster on satellite and solar technology vs. battery technology, it may be the better move for continuous renewables in many regions.
The economics of this invention are pretty neat because solar providers can suddenly double the run-time on an asset where they’ve already invested capital. That lets them pay close to the marginal price they could expect from that additional power generated. You can do a lot when you create that type of economic benefit, and we also expect them to have infinite access to funding from people who hate daylight savings time…
It remains unclear if Bond Villain Gustav Graves will receive the Nobel Prize for inventing this idea.
It’s a pretty exciting world to live in, and hopefully, your enemies won’t decide to pay for permanent sunlight directed at your bedroom window.
Make Sunsets deploy clouds in the stratosphere to cool Earth. This is identical to what happens when a volcano erupts (we remain terrified that someone is working on a business idea to erupt more volcanoes…)
The company uses balloons to release tiny reflective particles into the stratosphere. This creates a reflective layer that reduces the heat reaching the Earth’s surface and prevents the planet from overheating. This solution is not intended to be permanent; instead, it is meant to reach completion as society achieves CDR at scale and large industries decarbonize.
The following companies and solutions are also worth a look!
Respyre is developing bioreceptive concrete with unique moss-coating for improved air quality in cities.
Solar kiosks, where people can come and charge devices, are a strategy that’s catching on globally. They are a great solution for areas with limited power. At scale, they provide convenience while removing future demand on the grid when it’s more likely to burn fossil fuels.
RedWorks provides on-site 3D printing for the construction industry with the dirt you are standing on. This creates incredible emissions savings as it can draw power during peak renewables and creates something that removes transport miles, waste, and input emissions from historical processes.
