Emissions Decisions partners with Arbor to power environmental rankings of consumer products
That's right. Just let us know what product you want to see ranked and it will start to appear in our database.
IN THIS ISSUE
Our partnership with Arbor lets us rapidly and accurately track product emissions. We’ve been super impressed by the Arbor team’s rigor in calculating supply chain emissions and are excited to bring this to our community. Emissions data rarely gets to the consumer in a way they can understand and, most importantly, compare, which is what allows them to vote with their wallet. Under this partnership, we are excited to put that data in front of readers on the products they care most about.

Business plan additions are included below. We appreciated the feedback on our business plan and were so excited discussing one potential offering that we just had to add it.
The most exciting roles in cleantech are shared in partnership with our sponsor, Impact Logic. Weekly, we highlight a few unique jobs, from building robots to talking to plants.
Emissions Decisions is a weekly newsletter investigating our thesis on environmental trends/solutions. In its initial form, it is about hypothesis testing, and in its later stages, it will provide everything you need to help the environment. Our long-term goal is to provide tools that power optimal environmental decisions. We appreciate the support in achieving this!

Emissions Decisions has partnered with Arbor to power the environmental rankings of consumer products
We are excited to announce the launch of our partnership with Arbor. Under the partnership, the Arbor team will support us in quickly calculating lifecycle emissions across various products, allowing our readers to make optimal decisions.
Our core thesis has always been that people want more environmental products but can’t find them. The 2022 Business of Sustainability Index report highlighted that 66% of consumers in the United States and 80% of young adults (ages 18-34) were willing to pay more for sustainable products. Better data is required, though, to bridge the gap between willingness and action.
Over 50% of consumers believe brands across industries mislead them with green claims. These concerns are not without merit, as a recent United Nations report found that 60% of the sustainability claims in the industry reviewed were unsubstantiated or misleading.
Environmental footprints are rarely communicated reliably. Inconsistent calculation methodologies, disclosure (imagine it’s only on pg. 157 of a report), and lack of specificity means consumers often can’t use the data to vote with their wallets.
Data from Arbor will help provide accuracy and trust so that consumers can make better decisions and accelerate emissions reductions. Arbor does this best, and we are excited to have partnered with them. This will create a faster feedback loop, allowing customers to reward the companies that have already done the work (without figuring out if they have from a 200-page sustainability report). Good companies should be rewarded.
We are excited to start measuring products, so let us know what you most want to see. Feel free to message us below with the link to any products (we already had people send in bike gear, which is interesting). Pick that product you love, or take an alternative approach and pick the one your relative always brags about at Thanksgiving, and let's check how sustainable it is…
Expanding our business plan to help cities
Last week, we shared our business plan with readers, and we appreciated the feedback! There was one offering we wanted to add to based on discussions with readers below.
Help cities rank environmental initiatives to reduce taxpayer waste for a given amount of emissions. Globally, municipalities have not had the best success with environmental programs (see below). It’s a difficult position as they feel voters want them to do something, but the viability of specific initiatives can often only be decided by state and federal regulations/programs. This results in many big announcements, but the programs stop and start or fall through (unfortunately, never until after there has been a considerable cost to taxpayers). We think this sets back environmental progress as taxpayers rightly say, “Why’d you waste my money?”. It is not a problem without solutions and appears to be a problem of data/awareness. Several unique initiatives can produce a massive ROI for less taxpayer money; for example, reflective paint/coating to reduce heat and bio-receptive concrete that grows moss.
We are excited about this project as you can get to an emissions reduction per dollar of taxpayer money for each program. This should result in more efficient spending and more public support for what does get spent. Hopefully, this will prevent projects that are more about signaling than results, hurting everyone involved.
How do we know that it will save taxpayer money? We are willing to provide the region-specific rankings for free. It’s a good use of data we are already collecting, so please share this with your local city council member and tell them to reach out.
Impact Logic, a technical recruitment leader for impact-driven founders, sponsors our jobs section. Reach out to them here as you look to fill critical roles.
Below are 150+ JOBS, including examples of the newest exciting cleantech jobs globally. We believe a tragedy is occurring where young people are no longer excited about many careers, and we hope it’s simply because they aren’t aware of them. Our team will do more and more to highlight the most exciting cleantech roles, and we appreciate Impact Logic's support while we do so.
